My oh My…..
I have a HUGE “down fall”
for DONUTS!!
Now I usually go for the yeast donuts,
however I get a craving for those
Old Fashion Donuts that Hostess makes.
Of course that meant I HAD to
figure out how to make them myself! (lol)
Guess what?..I DID IT!
Homemade Old Fashioned Cake Donuts
4 C. Cake Flour
3/4 C. All Purpose Flour
3 tsp. Baking Powder
2 tsp. Salt
1 1/2 tsp. Nutmeg
1 1/2 C. Sugar
5 TBSP Lard or Plain Shortening
4 Eggland’s Best Egg Yolks
1 1/2 C Sour Cream
1 tsp. Almond Extract
Oil ~ for frying
GLAZE
3 C. Powdered Sugar
4-6 TBSP. Milk
*1 tsp. Vanilla or Maple flavoring~ optional
Sift together the flour’s, baking powder,
salt, and nutmeg set aside.
In a mixing bowl beat together the
lard, sugar. Add in Egg yolks one
at a time beating together in between each.
Fold in sour cream.
Mix half the dry ingredients in
to the wet, mix well.
Add remaining dry ingredients
in to the wet, blend well.
Knead dough on a floured
surface, roll out and cut into
donuts. Fry in hot oil.
~* these type of donuts DO NOT
need to be turned over. They are very “soft”
and will break apart. Donuts are done when
they turn a golden brown and the
top’s “crack”. Remove each donut
with a slotted spoon, let drain
on paper towel’s.
Glaze and “drip dry” on a
cooling rack.
Homemade is better!,

These are the kind of donuts our daughters prefer and we have a hard time finding the Hostess kind sometimes. I must give this recipe a try! Thanks for sharing.

For pity sakes! =) Is there anything you DON’T make?!! I am in awe…I’ve not ever made donuts like this. They look heavenly!

Those look DELICIOUS, Lark! I made donuts in a deep fryer for the first time this year and it’s a lot of fun. I love how the cake donut is crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. YUM!
